Resting Place For Dust

(Continued from precceding page)

Efficiency and long life are nearly always means of electronic communications and computations.

Precision manufacturing and rigid testing are vital as in production. To achieve both of these, and in the time required, the company employs a quality control team which includes a multitude of measures to practically eliminate troublesome dust particles.

One of these is an air conditioning system that maintains positive pressure in the manufacturing area. Access to this area is gained through dust locks which are maintained under a negative area pressure, thereby helping to create a dust collection point before materials enter the manufacturing department.

For the dust that manages to break through these barriers, there is no resting place. Vinyl asbestos floors in manufacturing, testing, and packaging areas are cleaned daily. Also, Cabot, Cabot & Forbes, Boston architectural firm, specified use of ceramic glazed structural facing tile for walls throughout the manufacturing area. This structural tile was also placed in running bond corridors, stairwells, and the reception and kitchen.

Vitritile has a completely impervious and non-absorbent finish, making it particularly useful in these recreations. The ceramic glaze finish is permanent, and easily kept clean by ordinary washing. This reduces any possible accumulation of dust particles which could hamper processing of the small and intricate diodes and transistors. Also, the fact that the material requires only periodic cleaning greatly reduces maintenance.

Lupi & Company, Inc., Boston general and masonry contractor, placed 90,000 pieces totalling 600 tons of the (nominal 8 by 16-inch face size) series structural clay tile. This was supplied in a wide variety of colors by Arketex Ceramic Corporation, Pittsburgh. Shades employed were white, yellow, white mottle, gray-blue, ocular green, marine blue, and accent orange, dark blue, light blue, green, and yellow.

The architectural firm was assisted in selection of the colors by The Design Corporation, Boston. Mural-like effects were achieved throughout the plant and principally in reception, corridor and stairwell areas through proper utilization of the various colors. These were built, rather than applied, right into the wall at no appreciable increase in construction cost.

Competition

(Continued from page 25)

It is all part of poor business, since most contractors, being aware of business cycles, realize these poor profits are temporary even though he does complain about them. Some contractors working on substantial amounts of borrowed capital find they are forced to do this. Anyone can see that a man making 2% on his investment and the money he uses would have to take some kind of action in this direction soon.

Summary-
5% for the me

Competition is not peculiar to just masonry contractors; it exists in every field where men compete for a livelihood. Even in the days when the Indians inhabited this country, if there was a drought in the area inhabited by one tribe, they moved into that of another. This meant constant war until either one side beat the other or the drought ended and the invading tribe could return to its own area.

The success of a business is primarily governed by the men who run it-their ability, sound judgment and common sense.

I realize I cannot tell you how to be assured of making a profit or doing away with competition, but I hope this discussion has helped and will help you in making sound, business decisions.
