of the building with the Suntrol blocks.

This decision carried the project over into the winter months, posing an interesting construction problem. Mr. May relates: "An unusual aspect of this job was that we were required to install the glass blocks under wide weather extremes of heat and cold. We laid the blocks in the hot summer months and during the peak cold months of early 1961. Even during the hottest and coldest days we maintained uninterrupted construction schedules.

Here are the bright new offices of Pittsburgh Gage & Supply Co. The light-diffusing glass blocks shown above allow maximum control of brightness and solar heat and minimum light transmission.

"To keep the job on schedule during the winter months we built wooden shelters around work areas and used electric heaters with fans to keep the men comfortable and to help mortar set. We allowed both frames and mortar to set for 48 hours and installed the blocks strictly according to the manufacturer's specifications. We had no complications or breakage whatever, from the time we began the job until we finished last June."

According to Mr. Beeson, before the glass block renovation the company spent $5,000 every three or four years on painting and repairing sashes. In addition the building was almost impossible to heat. With installation of the glass blocks, the company will ave approximately 400 in heating costs per year.

"Even better," says Mr. Beeson, "the renovation pointed the way to extra income by allowing us to lease our unused space to profitable tenants. Unused floors will be partitioned and remodeled into office space according to the wishes of prospective renters. We already have some tenants and prospects looks promising."

The project required a total of more than 8,000 12-inch and 3,244 8-inch glass blocks. About 80 per cent of the blocks were of the functional type. The remainder were decorative.

Almost 3,500 linear feet of aluminum channel, 228 pieces of aluminum sash, some 4,300 feet of expansion joint, and 8,100 feet of wall ties went into the project. More than 6,000 man-hours were needed to complete the entire glass-block renovation.
