CONTEST
This is one of the many fine state apprentice contests held as a preliminary to the National Competition. St. Louis, Mo., is the site of the National Contest on May 17-21 and if results are available before press time Masonry will carry a feature story in another section of this issue.
LAS, TEXAS Winners of the State Apprentice Contest are Johnson, Dallas, and Denny Beitler, Fort Worth. Both of these young bricklayer apprentices won the right to represent Taxas during the State Apprentice Bricklaying Contest held at the Fair Park Electric Building on March 30th.
Competing in a field of nine apprentices from around the state, Johnson was adjudged to have done the best bricklaying in quality of workmanship. Besides the right to represent Texas in the St. Louis National Contest, the winners received cash awards and sets of tools of their trade.
The State Contest was sponsored by the Texas State Conference of Bricklayers and was hosted by the Dallas Chapter of the MCAA and the AGC and the Bricklayers Local Union No. 5 of Dallas.
Judges for the contest were: Dee Brown, MCAA Member, Dallas; Tom Crist, AGC Dallas Member; and Oscar Panizzi, Local No. 5, Dallas. Kenneth Allred and Frank Leisner, both of Houston, placed third and fourth and won the right to attend the National Contest as alternates.
The contestants were representatives of the apprentice training programs operated in each of the various cities of the state through the joint cooperation of the U.S. Bureau of Apprenticeship & Training, local Chapters of the Mason Contractors Association of America, local Unions of the Bricklayers, Masons & Plasterers International Union of America and local AGC chapters.
