The field men of the Michigan State Conference have been working with the State Highway Department to encourage the use of brickmasonry in highway construction; and, in several job inspections at Michigan State College at Lansing, have assisted in improving relations with the college people and have started a trend away from brickmasonry construction. Because of their acquaintance with architects, it has been possible for them to assist sister locals in Michigan when their architects were designing work for other areas. For instance, they did liaison work for the Sault Sainte Marie school board. They are assisting one architect that is designing a 9-story elderly persons apartment building in Saginaw and two electrically heated apartments in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Their greatest achievement to date is in creating a trend to masonry windowless schools or schools with a maximum of windows and the elimination of metal or pre-cast panels. In Clare, Mich., they were directly responsible for changing a new school design from window and panel construction to brickmasonry with 20 per cent windows. Their greatest influence was demonstrated on a school in Midland, Mich., where the school was designed in ordinary construction and, because of the information furnished the school superintendent and school board engineer representatives of the Michigan Masonry Promotion Team, it was changed to a completely windowless building.
Recently a new high school in Flint, Mich., was changed to a brick windowless building and the Flint papers ran stories on the advantages of windowless structures taken freely from the Allied Masonry Council's book 1, "A Few Facts on School Construction." This has resulted in the construction of several other windowless schools in various cities covered by the program.
In addition, an attempt to sell the city of Lansing on constructing their proposed civic swimming pool, that was originally designed in metal, with reinforced brickmasonry resulted in the pool being built with block and tile. Also in Lansing, a high-rise apartment building was being designed in panels and, with the aid of a SCPI cost study on the building which proved the building to be less costly in brick, resulted in brick walls instead of panels.
