Cleanouts were bricked in and the placement of the tees were started.
After the pre-stressed elements were installed, the bricklayers filled in between the stems of the trees and the grout was placed.
A 2-1/2 in. concrete topping was placed over the slabs, which at intervals carries through the bearing wall and contains reinforcing to insure diaphragm action.
Originally Park Mayfair East was designed as a 14-story structure with a steel frame. Bids on the steel structure with the necessary fire-proofing proved it would be more costly than a masonry bearing-wall structure combined with pre-stressed concrete material. It was then re-designed as a 17-story apartment building utilizing masonry bearing-wall. An original design of masonry used a 9-1/4 in. wall with a 2 in. cavity, but to satisfy certain sections of the Uniform Building Code, it was deemed best to use the greater cavity width.
This structure, like Pennley Park Apartments, Pittsburgh, Pa., shows the many advantages that can result when the various characteristics of masonry materials are expertly utilized. Although it reduces over-all manpower requirements for the project, it means a greater work force for the mason contractor. Take a minute today and study those buildings which you now have under construction which could have efficiently used bearing-wall construction. Contact your local MCAA Chapter office, SCPI Regional or National Office, or the MCAA Executive Office in Chicago for further information or assistance. Help promote a greater Masonry Industry.
Park Mayfair East, Denver, Colorado, using the bearing-wall concept of construction soars up to record height of 165 feet. Architects were Anderson & Looms, AIA, with Dan Berich, MCAA Member, the Mason Contractor.
