AWARD OF MERIT
Malton Community Centre & District Library
Mississauga, Ontario

Architect: Raymond Moriyama: Consulting Engineer: Robert Halsall & Associates Ltd.: General Contractor: The Charles Nolan Company Ltd.: Mason Contractor: Clifford Masonry Ltd.: Unit Masonry Producers: Comtar Construction Materials and Primeau Argo Block Company Ltd..

Jury Comment: A wide variety of activities, ranging from squash courts to a library, are skillfully arranged around a central landscaped interior space. This complex is, in turn, organized around a large pool which, in winter, becomes a skating rink. The building appears as a series of irregular masonry forms which are boldly designed with brick and random stripes of split-faced concrete block.

Between these forms, both the interior and the more succesful exterior are paved with interlocking concrete units: the planting of trees, shrubs and vines is luxuriant. The overall complex is a most pleasant and successful solution to this problem of housing many different community functions as was evidenced by the use of the facility at the time of the jury's visit.

AWARD OF MERIT
First Church of Christ, Scientist
Oshawa, Ontario

Architects: Howard D. Chapman and Howard V. Walker: Consulting Engineer: Alan Zeegan Associates: General Contractor: CDS Construction & Design Services: Mason Contractor: R & E Masonry Ltd.; Unit Masonry Producer: Primeau Argo Block Company Ltd.

Jury Comment: The jury was most pleased with this charming submission. The design offers an excellent solution to a minimum budget project. The masonry detailing and patterning are good and are enhanced by its execution. The trellis is a simple but effective device for creating exterior space, a sense of privacy without exclusivity, and a contrast of scale to the mass of masonry areas.

Although the building is not similar in form to its residential neighbors, it fits well in scale with them. The structure conveys a sense of serenity and expresses appropriately the spirit of religion without ostentation. The jury commends the architects and their clients for acknowledging the potential architectural value of simple building materials.
