Jury Comment: A sensitive solution to a difficult design problem. The building appropriately relates to the historic scale and character of this town without recourse to eclecticism.
The open courtyard solution appears suitable for the building's use and in scale with the small buildings on the street. The maturing of the trees along the sidewalk will enhance this space. The detailing is simple, yet reflective of historical precedent. The building is well executed and shows suitable restraint in the articulation of its elements. The architects are commended for the production of a significant piece of street architecture and also for its pleasantly restrained interior spaces and use of masonry.

Jury Comment: This building offers a handsome design solution to a common suburban building problem-it offers a marker for suburban plazas to emulate. The size and location of the articulated openings are appropriate to the scale and function of the building and its parking lot environment. The solution of the massing problem between the two-story department store and the single-story garage is well handled. Although there was some concern over a portion of the masonry detailing, the jury agreed that the building has good scale appropriate to its location.
