ONTARIO DESIGN AWARDS continued from page 17

AWARD OF MERIT
Village Hill Condominiums
Hamilton, Ontario
Architect: Trevor P. Garwood-Jones; Consulting Engineer:
Omen Lee & Associates Ltd.; General Contractor: Fincup
Holdings Ltd.; Mason Contractor: Vincent DiBernardo
Construction Ltd.; Unit Masonry Producers: Burstein Brick
Ltd. and Day & Campbell Ltd.

Jury Comment: This highrise project offers no new social
directions but has been designed with great skill and is well
proportioned and attractively modulated. It is a superior
example of this building type which stands out in a
neighborhood of undistinguished buildings of this cate-
gory. It was selected for an award by the jury even though
in reviewing the medium and high density housing sub-
missions, it was initially inclined to favor the more origi-
nal low rise and "infill" concepts.

The brick selection and the care and precision of the
masonry detailing, though somewhat diminished by incon-
sistent concrete work, contribute a warm feeling of quality
to the development.

CONSERVING INTO ABUNDANCE-IMPOSSIBLE
►Conservation, fairness, and the development of substitutes are the
results of allowing relative prices for energy resources to change ac-
cording to changing supply-and-demand conditions. The President's
proposals, despite his talk of allowing the price of energy to reflect its
true replacement cost, will do worse than nothing to encourage pro-
duction; they will pervert the economic choices of our citizens....To
deemphasize production of energy resources so that we must use
less energy makes no more sense than attempting to solve a food
shortage by paying our farmers less for their products, increasing our
reliance on foreign sources of food, and demanding a decrease in
per capita food consumption-Sen. Dewey F. Bartlett (R-Okla.).
