BIA Expects Brick Demand to Continue

The 1979 residential housing market will stay "relatively strong," states John P. Gleason, president of the Brick Institute of America.

In a report to member companies, Gleason notes that while 1979 would not match the 1978 record demand for brick, the residential housing market should still be substantial. According to Gleason, "Consumers are still willing to sacrifice to buy homes. They are the only certain investment that more than stays even with inflation."

In addition, Gleason predicts high brick sales in 1979 because: "Commercial and office building sectors, typically the last part of the market to participate in a cyclical advance, began to hit their stride in 1978, more than a year behind the housing cycle. And today, office buildings, with a predicted new high of 215 million square feet to be built in 1979, and manufacturing buildings, with square footage expected to be up by 10 percent, present some of the best bets for 1979."

Gleason asserts that while there may well be a slowdown in residential housing starts-from 1978's figure of 2.1 million starts to 1.6 or 1.5 million such a decline will also provide "a needed respite, since another 2 million-start housing year would have put a critical strain on production capacity and supply of craftsmen.

"All in all," notes Gleason, "the composite forecast for brick is moderately good. Brick manufacturers would be able to expect 1979 brick sales to range somewhere between the 1976 and 1977 levels."
