PAVERS continued
On small areas, a wet sponge can be used to finish the joints and clean off the surface. The sponge must be rinsed often to remove the grout it picks up. Again, the same section may need to be gone over several times.
On large areas excess grout may be removed using a commercial buffer and pad. The pad will need to be removed occasionally and cleaned of the grout buildup. Once most of the grout has been removed by the buffer, water can be sprayed onto the surface and re-buffed to remove any remaining residue.
The final method is to use a grout bag to fill the joints between the paver units. When using a grout bag, it is extremely important that the grout has been especially mixed for that method of installation. Such a mix will generally be rich with portland cement, with some lime added to keep the sand particles from binding up in the nozzle of the bag.
Generally, the end joints of the pavers are filled first, then the continuous joints between the rows. If the joints are to be tooled, the same sequence is generally followed. They should be tooled when the grout is "thumb-print" hard.
While most of the grout residue on the surface of the pavers should have been removed by the finishing methods described, it may still be necessary to use a commercial cleaning solvent to remove residue which remains on the surface. The area paved should be covered with a polyethelyne covering and all traffic restricted for seventy-two hours to allow it to properly cure. Once cured, it is recommended that the area be sealed with a commercial sealant.
