New Foam Aids in Insulating Masonry Walls
The new foam-in-place insulation system developed by The Upjohn Co.'s CPR Division, Torrance, Calif., is showing promise as a cost-effective energy conservator in both new and existing masonry walls. Two recent applications in Texas and Arizona underscore the advantages of the low density formalde-hyde-free product.
At Adams Plaza No. 2, a two-story retail/office structure in Houston, the foam was used to fill the cores of a new interlocking type of energy-efficient concrete block designed to be laid without mortar. The calculated R-value (resistance to heat flow) of the insulated 8 in. walls is approximately 13 vs. 3 for uninsulated walls of the same block.
"The foam's resistance to heat flow, combined with the thermal-mass effect afforded by masonry construction, is expected to result in substantial savings in air conditioning and heating costs," said Ray Lebbetter, president of Lock-Block Inc. of Houston, developer and manufacturer of the interlocking block.
The Poly-C foam is supplied to the contractor in the form of two liquid components, which are combined using special metering and mixing equipment, and poured into the cavities to be installed. The rising foam flows and completely fills the cavity.
The interlocking block are made of lightweight, fiber-reinforced concrete, and are 8 in. thick, 12 in. high and 36 in. long. A shiplap joint on each edge assures locking action without mortar.
Suitability for Retrofitting
The recent insulation of a house in Arizona showed the suitability of Poly-C for retrofitting buildings of masonry cavity-wall construction. In this case the material 44 MASONRY-JANUARY, 1984
