The objective of the WICA is to supply information, opportunities and mentoring to women working in the concrete construction industry.
The Alliance is an online networking group designed to empower women in the concrete construction industry. WICA consists of a Web page - www.womeninconcrete.org, a FaceBook fan page, Twitter, and a LinkedIn group. An Advisory Board directs the momentum of the efforts, keeping the mission centered on positive information that will help women network and be successful.
The Women in Concrete Alliance was started by co-founders Kari Moosmann, former managing editor of Concrete Construction magazine, and Kimberly Kayler, president of Constructive Communication Inc. For more information, email info@womeninconcrete.org.
'Brick-Stainable' Winners Announced
Hoping to unearth innovative ideas to showcase brick in sustainable, new design uses, Potomac Valley Brick (PVB) launched its first international sustainable architectural design competition. With an overwhelming response, 95 entries from more than 17 countries around the world were submitted.
On Dec. 11, 2009, Brick-Stainable winners were selected by a prestigious panel of jurors, which included Carnegie Mellon Architecture Professor Vivian Loftness, University of Maryland School of Architecture Dean and Professor Garth Rockcastle, IDEO Practice Lead and Material Scientist Kara Johnson, and AXIM Director of Marketing Martin Vachon.
The jurors note that sustainability involves complex systems design and thinking. While individual entries were strong in some areas, they were less so in others. The selection of the three winners in each category recognizes the accomplishments of each, while preserving the aspirations of the competition for the future. The jury stated that there is particular value in looking at the winners as a set, as each submission excels in different aspects of the design challenge.
