Award-winning sculptor, DJ Garrity will lead two fascinating workshops explorating the stone carving process. As Sculptor-In-Residence of Mount Rushmore National Memorial, the artist has enjoyed a broad range of support for course development, which is reflected by the nationwide appeal of the “Garden Sculpture Workshop”.

The first workshop will take place at the Bakersfield Museum of Art, 1930 R Street, Bakersfield, CA 93301 from November 6-9, 2007. Please contact David Gordon at 661-323-7219 or visit www.bmoa.org for more information. The cost is $475 and includes the materials and tools.

The second workshop will be held at the San Luis Obispo Art Center, 1010 Broad Street, Obispo, CA 93401 from November 13-16, 2007. Please contact Karen Kile at 805-543-8562 or visit www.sloartcenter.org for more information. The cost is $475.

The four-day course is a hands-on workshop, which utilizes the human face as a template to establish a basic understanding of the stone carving process with a light approach to carving techniques and a further exploration of the esoteric values associated with this ancient art, the rhythm and flow of creative endeavor.

“I find the masons that take the course are focused and really come away with valuable insights into the stone sculpture process,” said Garrity. “In the last workshop the masons planned to use/carve the human face as a signature within their work on walls and fireplaces.”

Garrity who was named by Irish America Magazine as one of the “Top 100 Irish Americans” for 2006 is currently teaching workshops at major museums and botanical gardens from coast to coast. The “Garden Sculpture Workshop” is considered appropriate for the novice or students with previous experience and recommended both for individual exploration and professional development.

The workshops of Sculptor, DJ Garrity are accredited by Augustana College of South Dakota. Visit DJ's website www.djgarrity.com for additional information. Class size is limited to twelve students.
