Spouse Event

History of the American Front Porch & Grand Luncheon Experience

While MCAA members attend Speed Dating to network with suppliers, spouses can enjoy a historic tour with great company. This one of a kind activity ends with the legendary Grand Luncheon Experience.

The front porch of the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island is a historic and iconic feature, often celebrated as the world’s longest porch, stretching an impressive 600 feet. Built in the late 19th century, this expansive porch runs along the entire front facade of the hotel and serves as a grand gathering place for guests.

The Grand Luncheon features fresh salads, seafood like oysters and smoked fish, domestic cheeses, seasonal fruits, hot dishes, and a premium carving station, plus a lavish dessert display to satisfy any sweet tooth. Beverages include coffee, tea, lemonade, with soft drinks, wine, beer, and a full bar available for purchase. This experience has earned the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence multiple times for its quality and hospitality.

📍 Mackinac (MACK-in-awe) Island

Mackinac Island, nestled in Lake Huron between Michigan’s peninsulas, boasts scenic trails, the striking limestone Arch Rock, and historic sites like the 1780 Fort Mackinac and the 1887 "Grand Hotel". To celebrate the MCAA's 75th year we're revisiting this island, where the MCAA charter was signed into existence on August 27th, 1950.

August 27, 1950

The first convention of the Mason Contractors Association of America was held in Sun Porch of the Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan. Pictured around the table (left to right) are: Norman Bourchard, Gregor Pichler, William Ouweneel, William Picco, George Hill, John Taheny, Joseph Cachey, Dominic Manprisio, Jack Downs, Carl Yantz, Marshall Harrison, Harry Cohen, John Hawkes, Floyd Elliott, Bob McKean, R.R. “Bob” Sneed and Bob Fulcher. Not pictured are: Evan L. Harris, Fred Steinhoff, Fred Slather and George Miller.

Where it all began

The Grand Hotel, opened in 1887 on Mackinac Island, has been a cherished summer retreat known for its Victorian charm and hospitality. Accessible only by boat and plane, the island has no cars, with transportation provided by foot, bicycle, or horse-drawn carriage. The hotel has a rich history and continues to be a popular destination, celebrating its legacy and the MCAA's charter signing in 1950.

Note: You are STRONGLY encouraged to book within the MCAA's room block, which gives attendees access to substantially lower rates than the general public. You will receive your hotel request upon successful registration and payment.  Registration information here.

Overflow Hotel

Our overflow hotel will be a selection of rooms from the scenic Waterfront Collection nestled in the heart of Mackinac Island, and just a 10-minute walk or short carriage ride away from the Grand Hotel. They offer modern elegance with island charm. The beautifully-appointed rooms overlook the waterfront and are centrally-located near shops, restaurants, and ferry docks.

For those who would prefer not to walk, horse-drawn carriage taxis are available from the ferry docks to both hotels for $9 per person (cash only 8AM - 5PM; after-hours rides are arranged by calling 906-847-3323).

Getting in and Around

Experience a scenic journey to Mackinac Island! Ferries operate daily from St. Ignace and Mackinaw City, providing a picturesque ride across Lake Huron. The Arnold Line and Shepler's Ferry offer convenient service, with departures every 30 minutes during peak times. Enjoy breathtaking views of the Mackinac Bridge and the island. Tickets can be purchased online or at the docks.
