Bid Practices Code

AKRON, OHIO-T. Walter Kirk, St. Louis MCA Chapter official, discussed the bidding practices code used in that city before a meeting of contractors here last month.
Kirk is an officer of the Construction Code of Greater St. Louis and was one of the prime movers in establishment and adoption of the code there. The code, basically designed to halt the practice of bid shopping, is gaining in popularity throughout the country. It is currently being used in Los Angeles, San Diego and Washington, D. C., as well as St. Louis, and is being given serious consideration by Indianapolis.
Arketex Wins International
Awards for Ad Excellence
PHOENIX, ARIZ. Four international awards were won by Arketex Ceramic Corp., Brazil, Ind., in the 1960 Advertising Awards Competition conducted here recently by the Affiliated Advertising Agencies.
Arketex entries were among some 1,000 entries submitted by 60 members of the AAA Network.
The awards were made for the campaign of magazine advertising of Arketex Ceramic Glazed Structural Tile; a series of folders devoted to the firm's products; a design kit developed for use by architects; and a booklet prepared for reference by architects and builders.

3,000 Equipment Executives
Attend AED's Annual Meeting
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. Some 3,000 construction equipment executives and representatives attended the 42nd annual meeting of the Associated Equipment Distributors, Feb. 5-9 in this city. Featured was a panel of top-flight industry leaders who discussed 1961 equipment prospects and creation of better policies for future activities. Other sessions included a round-table to examine some of the more pressing problems confronting the industry, distributor-manufacturer selling practices and policies, improved sales and profit practices.
Keynoters were H. J. Mayer, AED president of San Francisco, and Clare Miller, president-elect of the Associated General Contractors of America.
Illinois Brick Buys Poston
Company in Expansion Move
CHICAGO, ILL-Illinois Brick Co., Chicago, has purchased the Poston-Herrin Brick Co., Inc., Attica, Ind., George Gammie, Illinois president, has announced. The Attica plant will be operated as a wholly-owned subsidiary, and is currently down for plant improvements and repairs.
John R. Mitchell, manager of the IB Western Brick Div., Danville, III., will direct the Attica operations. Irv and Lloyd Poston have retired from the firm after more than 30 years in the industry.
Illinois Brick with an annual volume of more than $6 million, is the largest producer of Chicago commons and leads the midwest in autoclave block production.
Apprentice Chairman
WASHINGTON, D. C. Thomas F. Murphy, secretary, Bricklayers, Masons & Plasterers International Union, has been named chairman of the National Joint Bricklaying Apprenticeship Committee. Herschel W. Hunt, MCAA, is vice chairman, and Don Dvorak, AGC, committee secretary.

At Testimonial Dinner
BOSTON, MASS. John J. Murphy, president of the Bricklayers, Masons & Plasterers International Union of America, was guest of honor at a testimonial dinner here last month in recognition of his service to the industry. The dinner was held under auspices of Local 6, Massachusetts, with the cooperation of the State Conference.
Among industry leaders attending the affair at the Statler-Hilton Hotel were: MCAA leaders and members Stephen D. Raimo, president; James Lonie, vice president; Joseph Szabo, treasurer; Anthony Perri, vice president-east; Joseph Holme, president, New York City Chapter; Pat Filippi, president, Cook County Chapter; David Sibbald, member, Hartford, Conn., Chapter; George A. Miller, executive vice president.
Also A. C. Frommeyer, Philadelphia, convention co-chairman; Tony Nolfi, Philadelphia; and James Snyder and Don Bidwell, both from Detroit.
Distributors Name Molnar
Gordon Molnar of Toronto, Canada, has been appointed to the board of the National Association of Distributors & Dealers of Structural Clay Products to fill the unexpired term of P. L. Campbell, also of Toronto. Campbell resigned from the board on his retirement from business.
