MCAA HONORED BY DEPT. OF LABOR

MCAA was honored by the U. S. Department of Labor for its outstanding service in Apprenticeship Training. Photo shows Mr. Herschel Hunt (left), Chairman of the MCAA Apprenticeship Committee, and William F. Nelson, post MCAA President, with plaque signed by the then Secretary of Labor Arthur Goldberg. Plaque was presented during the commemoration of 25th Anniversary of the Dept. of Labor's Apprenticeship Program, that took place in Washington Aug. 21. The meeting was attended by officials of both management and labor, and concluded with a banquet in the Grand Ballroom of the Park Sheraton. Attending for the MCAA were Mr. and Mrs. Herschel Hunt, Indianapolis, Ind. Mr. and Mrs. William Nelson, Washington, D. C.; Mr. and Mrs. Paul Ponton, Washington, D. C., and Mr. George A. Miller, Chicago.

Sutherland of the First National Bank of Dallas, with succeeding messages being given by George A. Miller, Gerald Sutherland, Dean Ramey, Bob Batten and W. B. Slayden.

At the group's business session on Saturday afternoon Gerald Sutherland was elected as the group's new chairman for the coming year, and Corpus Christi was selected as the site of the meeting for 1963.

Many highly entertaining features were incorporated in this year's meeting, and to those who attended, it was undoubtedly the most valuable as far as the business sessions were concerned, and one of the most enjoyable entertainment-wise.

of the MCAA, cited the value of cooperation "to enable the industry to meet the competitive market that lies ahead."

"If we can produce in consistent quantity and higher caliber of workmanship, we can stand at the threshold of a greater and enlarged masonry market," continued Mr. Lonie in this theme.

Other speakers on the program were J. C. Turner, president, Washington Central Labor Council; Marie McGuire, Commissioner of Public Housing Administration; C. J. Haggerty, President, Building and Construction Trades Department, AFL-CIO; Douglas Whitlock, General Counsel and Chairman of the Board SCPI; Edward Leonard, president, OPCMIA, and J. L. Loomis, General Counsel, Tile Contractors Association.

Milwaukee, Wise. Architect S. Theodoro is now located in offices at 3108 N. Cicero, Chicago... MCAA staff extends condolences to member Jack Cook, Miami, Fla., whose father recently passed away.

S. Carl Smithwick was recently made an honorary director of the Expanded Shale Clay and Slate Institute. In a recent announcement from Basalt Rock Co., Inc., Napa, Calif., A. G. Streblow has been elected chairman of the board and principal executive officer.

Colin Munro, formerly regional director of Region 5-Structural Clay Products Institute in Chicago, has been appointed sales manager, Cook County Building Supply Co., distributor of brick, tile and other building products in the Chicago area. Charles F. Murphy, AIA, partner, C. F. Murphy Associates received Loyola University's 1962 Alumni Award recent. The Damen Award is the institution's highest academic award given annually to a Chicagoan.
