irregularities to provide a keying action which produces a more intimate bond.

Some engineers have the erroneous impression that the stronger a mortar is in compressive strength, the better it is. Actually, as mortars are made stronger (by increasing the cement content), they become more rigid and brittle and generally unable to accommodate to movements and stresses caused by settlement, strong winds, thermal changes, wetting and drying, etc. High lime mortars possess some resilience and tend to accommodate movement without undue cracking.

Finally, lime offers considerable economy, both in initial construction and in low maintenance. Because of these many advantages, lime remains an essential ingredient in mortar, and enough should be used for best results. As a general rule, the National Lime Association recommends a 1:1:6 cement-lime-sand mortar (by volume) for below grade construction, or where extremely heavy loads or cold weather conditions exist. For all other applications, a 1:2:9 cement-lime-sand mix is recommended.
