Insurance For Contractors
(continued from page 13)

The experience of the individual contractors who form the venture, their loss history, interest in safety activity, size of the contract and so on. Premiums are largely negotiated, either on a guaranteed cost or retrospective basis.

Most contractors call in their insurance representatives before bidding such a project to determine in advance how much premium may be involved. It is important at this point to make available as much information as possible concerning the work to be performed and physical hazards of the job site. Specifications, blueprints and plans should be available for examination, if at all possible, to hold insurance costs to a minimum, thereby increasing your chances of presenting a successful bid. Underwriters tend to be apprehensive over what they do not know and make some allowance for unanswered questions when determining how much premium to charge. By answering those questions fully, the chances of securing a favorable quotation will be enhanced.

PAYROLL AUDIT PROCEDURES

Your insurance representative should be able to save you an enormous amount of time, and perhaps premium, by arranging in advance the specific record which should be maintained for examination by insurance company auditors.

For example, an up-to-date list of maximum payroll limitations which apply under Workmen's Compensation and General Liability Policies should be made available and adhered to. These limitations vary by state.

Certificates of insurance, mentioned under a specific heading previously, should be requested and kept on file for the auditor's use. Because you have the responsibility of providing Workmen's Compensation benefits to any employee of a subcontractor who is uninsured, the company is entitled to a premium charge for such exposure. A certificate of insurance from your sub contractor is proof of coverage.

Hired Automobile Insurance charges are reduced 95% where a certificate of insurance is available to the auditor as proof of primary insurance. There is no need to pay the full premium when a piece of paper available without charge can all but eliminate a premium at final audit.

Where limits of liability, and consequently premium rates, vary by job, care should be taken to maintain records so that a breakdown is readily available. Where this becomes complicated, or particularly when a new insurance carrier assumes the risk, it is most helpful to establish in advance what will be asked for and reach basic agreement about how the records will be maintained.
