2000 Year Old Brick Found!

Forty times as old as communism, this huge brick dates back to the original imperialists, the ancient Romans. The brick is presented by Yugoslav ambassador Bogdan Crnobrnja (Surr-no-burr-nya) to George C. Sells, president of Tennessee's General Shale Products Corp., and of the U.S. brick trade association-the Structural Clay Products Institute.

General Shale, an ardent collector of historic brick, contacted the Yugoslavs last year with slim hopes of expanding its collection. It was a 40 lb. surprise when the Yugoslav Institute for Preservation of Historic Monuments obliged.

The brick was discovered by archaeologists near the city of Ptuj (Pt-oo-ee) in an old Roman brickyard, then on the eastern fringes of that empire. The Romans, historians say, liked to take their brickmakers along wherever they went. Holes in the clay at first baffled brickologists, but turned out to accommodate plumbing.

In General Shale's museum, the 2000-year old brick will be a mere youngster. The collection includes brick as old as Methuselah, and one dates back to Jericho, more than 9,000 years old.
