Portland Holds 12th Annual Industry Breakfast

In keeping with the happy tradition of the holiday season, the bricklayer apprentices, mason contractors to whom they are indentured, their instructors, committee members and friends of masonry are annually feted with a breakfast in December. This was their twelfth event.

The Commissioner of Labor gave a history of our states apprenticeship program, pointing out Oregon was the second state to adopt an apprenticeship training program. Program included: music, a talented high school youth circus, selected 35MM films of past years breakfast events and contests, plus several masonry projects showing members present working during the year.

Shultz Names Committee

In addition to Chairman Spoerer, Mr. Shultz named seven other members to the committee. They are: David V. MacCollum, Safety Director, U.S. Army Strategic Communications Command, Fort Huachuca, Arizona, and Barry C. Brown, Director, Michigan Department of Labor, Lansing, Michigan.

George E. Aro, Safety Manager, United Engineers and Constructors, Inc., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and George A. Moore, President, George Moore Associates, Inc., Portland, Oregon (the third employer representative will be named later).

Alan F. Burch, Safety Director, International Union of Operating Engineers, Washington, D.C.; Paul H. Connelley, Safety Director, United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, Washington, D.C., and Victor E. Whitehouse, Safety Director, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Washington, D.C.

The new law under which the committee was created will cover between 1½ million to 2 million construction workers-40 to 50 percent of all workers in this field. The legislation:

• Provides that construction workers on covered contracts be afforded safe and healthful working conditions.

• Directs the Secretary of Labor to promulgate safety and health standards for workers covered.

• Directs the Secretary of Labor to seek compliance with safety and health standards on Federal or Federally-assisted contracts or subcontracts for construction work.

• Provides avenues for judicial review for contractors aggrieved by the Secretary's actions.

• Directs the Secretary of Labor to provide for establishment and supervision of programs for educating and training both employers and workers in accident-prevention techniques.

Elect Holman

Re-elected for a second term were A. Daniel Barton, Jr. (O.W. Ketcham, Inc., Philadelphia, Pa.); Howard Dudding (Great Southern Supply Co., Houston, Tex.); James R. Holman (Holman Brick Co., Des Plaines, III.); George R. Kruer (Lincoln Brick Co., Grand Rapids, Mich.); and William L. Needler (Thomas Moulding Brick Co., Chicago, III.)

The first convening of the new board on November 4 elected James R. Holman (Holman Brick Co., Des Plaines, III.) president; George S. Hays (John E. Cooper Co., Akron, Ohio); and George W. Pearson (Colonial Brick Co., Detroit, Mich.) vice presidents; Howard Dudding (Great Southern Supply Co., Houston, Tex.) secretary; and William J. Rudolph (Old Fort Industries, Inc., Fort Wayne, Ind.) treasurer.

A happy husband is one who lays down the law and cheerfully accepts the amendments. Intelligence tests are simple for baseball managers. If the team wins, he's smart.
