Former Gas Station Gets Facelifting Through Clever Use of Glass Block
When the Wheeling, III., News Agency underwent face-lifting recently, owner Walter Schultz sought to promote awareness of his company through bold, progressive building design. He found it in a building facade that incorporates modern, decorative glass block with traditional brick. The result is not only contemporary and attractive, but functional.
Formerly a gas station, the building was selected five years ago by Mr. Schultz for his company because of its location on busy Route 45 and its ample parking area. Of 25 employees, all but three are kept busy delivering newspapers and magazines to retail outlets in the company's 120 square-mile distribution area.
Following a design by architect Ronald Stahl, expansion of the single story structure was completed last September. Since then, few passing motorists recognize the station with which they were once familiar. Across the front and one

side of the 57-foot by 94-foot structure, light, multicolored brick alternate with 32-inch wide columns of glass block, called Chiaro II.
The block are sculptured on both surfaces so that changes in light and in one's viewing angle of the grill-like pattern produces unique visual effects. Each block is accented by an opaque block pattern. The opaque block is a permanent, fired-on ceramic frit.
Measuring 8" square by 4" deep, the block are manufactured by Pittsburgh Corning Corp., Pittsburgh, for both environmental and decorative applications. A partial vacuum, hermetically sealed in each unit, provides a high insulation value which eliminates wintertime surface condensation. The sealed block, which are virtually unbreakable, also reduce sound transmission and eliminate dust
