IMI Off To Fast Start

either supporting IMI or planning to do so with their new contracts, it is imperative that every city, regardless of size, do its fair share. "In addition to the funds this provides for the national effort, it makes it possible for each area to get IMI help and join in efforts to recapture local markets lost to the competition," he said. "For IMI to be truly successful, and for our problem to be coped with, all areas in the U.S. and Canada need to pitch in," he emphasized.

Funding for IMI is developed through collective bargaining agreements calling for le an hour contributions for each hour worked by BM&PIU members in the U.S. and Canada. The IMI labor-management trust fund's objective is to promote quality masonry construction to increase work opportunities for mason contractors, bricklayers, masonry workers, and others in the industry.

Ad Campaign Underway

IMI is now engaged in its first national advertising campaign. Launched in October, full-page advertisements advise architects, engineers, home builders, building owners, corporate leaders, and others, that, "Today and every day for 50 years a masonry wall will cost you less." The ads are appearing in Business Week, Fortune, Architectural Record, Architecture Canada, Buildings, House & Home, Professional Builder, Progressive Architecture, and House & Home's Directory of Modular Housing Producers.

The ads offer two publications of comparative cost data compiled by the Structural Clay Products Institute and the National Concrete Masonry Association. They reveal that, "Initially, a six-inch precast concrete panel wall costs 24% more than a 10-inch brick and block cavity wall; a metal sandwich panel costs 29% more than the masonry wall, and a double plate glass wall costs 33% more. Over the 50-year life of a building, "ultimate cost analysis shows that the precast concrete panel will cost 16% more than masonry, the metal panel 21% more, and the double plate glass 217% more."

Numerous Cities Help

"These advertising efforts are possible," Bidwell explained, "because in just nine months of operation IMI established a base of financial support which is broadening out from coast to coast and from Florida to Newfoundland." Some of the cities where MCAA Chapters, BM&PIU Locals, and mason contractors are providing support for IMI are: New York City and Long Island, Buffalo, Albany, Schenectady and nearby upstate New York cities, Camden, N.J., Philadelphia, Norristown, and Butler, Pa., Detroit and Jackson, Mich., Chicago, III., Salt Lake City, Utah, Portland and Eugene, Oreg., Seattle, Tacoma, Spokane, and Pasco, Wash., Sacramento, Calif., Lawton, Okla., the Maritime Provinces of Canada, Terre Haute and South Bend, Ind., West Palm Beach and Jacksonville, Fla., Newton, Mass., and nearby communities, the States of Nebraska, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, and New Hampshire. In addition to other cities and areas too numerous to list, a great number of U.S. and Canadian cities are now amending their contracts, are awaiting final approval of their agreements by the Masonry Industry Craft Board, or are planning to include IMI in their upcoming agreements, Bidwell pointed out.

Promotion material and guidance in establishing IMI support are available through: Neal English, Executive Director, IMI, 823 Fifteenth St., N.W., Washington, D. C. 20005.
