MCAGC Presents "Excellence" Awards
A capacity audience was on hand at the Regency Hyatt
House, Rosemont, III., November 27, for the 1971 "Ex-
cellence in Masonry" awards program sponsored by the
Mason Contractors Association of Greater Chicago. It was
the group's first such event and was held in conjunction
with a dinner-dance. Program Chairman Charles N. Ander-
son of SGM Corp. formally presented the awards, with
Donald E. Larsen, President of MCAGC, handling the pro-
gram introduction. Frank Laureys served as entertainment
chairman. The complete list of award winners will be
carried in a future issue of Masonry.

Introduce I/D Floor-Ceiling System
A Concrete Housing Seminar featuring the new I/D
floor-ceiling system was held at Dewey Portland Cement
Company's plant on May 19 near Buffalo, Iowa.

The I/D system, "Integrated Distribution" (mechanical
trades are integrated into the floor), was developed by
the Portland Cement Association and the Keystone Steel
& Wire Co. of Peoria, III. It incorporates small steel girders
and molded forms which become a permanent part of the
floor. Holes are cut into the molded forms for heating.

Permanent fiberboard form is fitted over steel purlins prior
to placement of concrete for new I/D Floor developed by
Portland Cement Association. Mechanical and electrical sys-
tems will be carried in open area of the form. This is the
floor of a residence in Wisconsin.

water, electrical and other systems. After the mechanical
systems are installed, concrete is poured over the forms.

Besides the advantages of fireproofing, soundproofing
and insulation, the I/D system is economically competitive
with standard construction materials. It was recently in-
stalled (in the Houston, Texas area) at $1.25 per square
foot, including mechanical systems. That includes the steel,
forms, concrete, labor and shoring costs, but doesn't in-
clude edge forming.

Through the use of small steel girders, called perlins, the
I/D floor can be placed in lengths up to 24 feet without
supporting beams, leaving the area below free of obstruc-
tion.

Attended by nearly 300 area business, finance, con-
struction and other people interested in potential solutions
to the low-cost housing problem, discussions and demon-
strations about concrete research, structural cellular con-
crete, and concrete building systems were given by officials
of the Dewey Company, Martin Marietta Corporation.
Keystone Steel & Wire Company, the Portland Cement
Association, and Precast Systems, Inc. Dewey is a Division
of Martin Marietta.
