Designing an addition or annex to an existing building has an inherent constraint, and the success of the total design depends on a responsive awareness. The Hammurabi jury selected the Good Samaritan Physicians' Office Building Annex for the Institutional Building Project Award. Through the rich color and texture of brick, the arches provide a graceful softening line at the pedestrian level. The detailing is articulate and refined in all its components.
Oregon Masonry Awards
The 1974 Hammurabi Awards banquet sponsored by the Oregon Masonry Guild drew more than 100 architects, engineers, mason contractors and other guests to the Portland Hilton Hotel, February 5. The annual event honored those who received awards for their excellence in the use and design of masonry construction. The awards are named for King Hammurabi of ancient Babylon who is credited with establishing the first building codes for that part of the world. Each of the winning designers in the competition received specially inscribed bronze plaques and matching certificates lettered in handsome calligraphy. Among those recognized in the following categories were:
Grand Award Selection, Wong & Hart, AIA, for the Data Systems Plaza Building (Masonry, November/December, 1974).
Open Space Design Award of Merit, Daniel, Mann, Johnson & Mendenhall, AIA, for O'Bryant Square & Fountain To A Rose (Masonry, February, 1975).
Institutional Building Project Award of Merit, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill Architects, for the Good Samaritan Physicians' Office Building Annex.
Innovation Through Renovation of An Existing Building Award of Merit, Grant Lee Adams, Architect, for the Lincoln Savings & Loan Association Building (Masonry, March, 1974).
Capital Improvement Program Special Award of Merit, Bank Building Corporation, Designers, for the Far West Federal Savings Building (see cover). This project was given a special award recognizing Far West Federal's extensive capital improvement in the Portland area. The financial institution is utilizing slump block painted white for all of its branch banking facilities, creating an easily recognizable corporate theme for the neighborhoods they serve.
A new classification was created this year for excellence in the design and use of masonry in the construction of a single-family residence. Builder Gary Markstaller received the award for the Stephen Wadium residence in Portland.
