STRAPPING CONCRETE BLOCK
continued from page 11

Q.-Ten or 15 years ago, most block was used for back-up. Today the concept of a masonry wall is a through-the-wall unit, and the usage of block has changed. Is this correct?

Lunde: It has changed, but probably not to that extent. In our area, most of our block go for back-up or partitions.

Q.-Let's talk about the time required to construct a strapped package. Is is minimal? It's automatic, isn't it?

Olson: Well, you've got your investment in the strapping machines.

Q.-What about the load, the size, and the weight? These vary with the size of the unit.

Olson: We relate the package to a uniform weight. In other words, there aren't too many fours in cubes as there are eights. We try to keep the break-away concept down to around 800 pounds.

Q.-Has there been any problem or change in storage methods with the break-away package?

Vandervait: No change. But I will say there have been problems, especially when you're storing specialty products for quite some time. You're not moving them. Then we do get a deterioration of the bands. If we made a supply for a year, sometimes the bands will break, and then we have to reband.

Olson: We don't have a problem. We run 3-inch block every three years. They are strapped and put on pallets. If there is any deterioration we strap on the pallet without losing any time.

Bronson: We could not stock an architectural unit without having it on a pallet at our plant. It would be frozen in the winter. All of our block sit on some type of wood. Otherwise they would be frozen in.

Q.-It has been indicated that the strapped break-away package has a sales advantage because it is something the mason contractors have been asking for. Is that correct?

Lunde: They like it.

Olson: Yes, in fact that was the easiest selling job I've ever had.
