SOLAR ENERGY HOME
continued from page 45

Two patio doors opening to the garden are fitted with exterior metal shades that close at the touch of a button.

The "active" solar heating system incorporates roof-top collectors with an area of 600 square feet. Water flowing through the collectors is pumped to a thousand-gallon storage tank on the second floor of the house. The heated water in the tank is then pumped through air flow coils which pick up the heat for distribution through ducts to warm the air in the house, and to liquid flow coils which provide heat for domestic hot water use.

A third water "loop" collects heat from the fireplace when it is in use, and returns it to the central heat storage tank.

The water that flows through the roof collectors ranges in temperatures from 140 to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. The storage tank can provide heat for space heating for three days. Together the active and passive solar features of the Rust home are designed to provide 50-60 percent of the house's heating needs.
