About Our Cover
In 1978 the Discalced Carmelites of Holy Hill embarked on a long-range program to provide improved facilities for pilgrims and visitors to the Shrine of Mary in Hubertus, Wis. A master plan was developed which included a new entrance lobby and restrooms, guesthouse renovations, new dining areas, circulation links between existing and new facilities, resurfacing of the elevator tower to better match the architectural style and detail of the church, and restoration of the natural landscaping and outside steps to the church.

"A primary objective of this phased program was to enhance the beauty of Holy Hill by establishing a unity of architectural character reflecting the monastic theme of the early twentieth century structures," commented David P. Brust, AIA, of Brust-Heike/Design Associates based in Milwaukee. "The workmanship of the masons was outstanding."

The program objectives were accomplished by matching readily available brick in color and texture with the original church and monastery, and by giving special attention to brickwork and cut stone details. The finished work of Phase I closely matches the richness and attention to detail of the original church.

"We attribute our success in establishing the architectural unity expressed in this facility, which was constructed over an 80-year period, to the exterior brickwork, its character, permanence, availability and ease of detailing." said Brust.

The Holly Hill addition was selected for a 1981 "Excellence In Masonry" award presented by the Masonry Institute of Wisconsin. D. M. and C. M. Frey, Inc. was the mason contractor for the project.
