Masonry Institute of Atlanta Honors
Area Architects for Building Design
The Atlanta-based architectural firm of FABRAP, Inc. (Finch Alexander Barnes Rothschild & Pascal, Inc.) has received a 1981 Special Category Award from the Masonry Institute of Atlanta for its design of the exterior of the Coca-Cola Co. International Headquarters complex.
The firm also received the Institute's Certificate of Merit for its design and use of brick on the exterior of the Northcreek Office Park complex.
The Coca-Cola Co. headquarters is sheathed with Texas Sunset Beige granite that has been treated with a thermal sanded finish to add texture to the surface of the stone. The building, which opened early in 1980, is the first structure in Atlanta to use granite extensively as the primary exterior finish.
Texas Granite Co., Marble Falls, Tex., cut, finished and numbered each of the panels before trucking them from the Texas quarry to the building site. The average panel weighs 3,960 lbs., is 16 ft. high, 5 ft. wide, and 3% in. thick. The spandrels are 4 ft. high and 10 ft. long.
Tom Pardue, FABRAP design architect, commented. "The granite that was chosen will remain looking the way it looks today for many years. The surface of the stone is extremely dense and will absorb very little dirt. It is almost self-cleaning."
In presenting the award the panel of judges, selected from the Birmingham (Ala.) chapter of the American Institute of Architects, wrote, "The jury was charged with recognizing achievement in masonry design other than conventional brick and tile. This project was selected because the granite exterior gave the building the richness and prominence dictated by the program."
The mason contractors on the project were David Lyle Masonry Co., Inc., Chamblee, Ga., and CST Construction Co. of Chicago.

The Coca-Cola Co.'s International Headquarters is the first structure in Atlanta to be extensively clad in granite. The fabricator of the panels, Texas Granite Co., was also responsible for implementing FABRAP, Inc.'s design for the Coca-Cola logo signs at the top of the tower. The logo is entirely cut out of the granite so that the universally recognizable symbol is seen for miles. The sign is 48 ft. long, nearly 14 ft. high, and appears on all four sides of the structure.
