Ohio College Pioneers Microfilm Use
In Construction Education
A microfilm lab for construction education, believed to be the first in the country, is giving students at Ohio's Columbus Technical Institute a comprehensive look at state-of-the-art advances in building technology. The equipment is used as part of an innovative degree program in construction management that was developed with the support of the Columbus, Ohio, building industry.
Columbus Tech has the largest, fully equipped laboratory of Dodge/SCAN microfilm equipment, where students learn to read the latest building plans and specifications available on microfilm and calculate required quantities of building materials. They then make field trips to local job sites to see the same buildings under construction.
Since 1968 F. W. Dodge has been converting new architectural plans and specifications to microfilm for contractors, suppliers and other building trade firms that bid on these projects.
Model Subcontract Talks Collapse;
ASC, ASA Set Educational Campaign
A joint educational program to assure prompt payment to subcontractors has been announced in Washington, D.C. by the Associated Specialty Contractors (ASC) and the American Subcontractors Association (ASA).
The program was developed in the wake of a recent breakdown in talks among those two groups and the Associated General Contractors (AGC) to draft a standard subcontract form for the construction industry.
The ASC and ASA said an educational campaign is necessary since slow payment to subcontractors by general contractors is one of the most pressing difficulties facing specialty contractors today, causing cash-flow problems, costly project delays and, in some cases, contractor failures.
Ongoing negotiations between the specialty and general contractor groups to draft a model subcontract form came to a halt in December, 1981 when AGC abruptly canceled its participation in the semiannual ASC/ASA/AGC Joint Cooperative Committee meeting scheduled for December 2-4 in Nashville. Tenn.
Over a period of years a joint subcontract form has been discussed by ASC and ASA in the group's semiannual meetings with AGC as part of an overall effort to develop industry positions and resolve matters of mutual concern on issues such as payment problems.
As part of its new educational program, the two groups will use seminars and publications to focus industry attention on the burden slow payment places on specialty contractors.
In gearing the educational campaign, ASC and ASA jointly stated. "We have no choice but to promote alter-
