BIA Promotes Brick Via National Advertising

The Brick Institute of America's 1984 advertising campaign, stressing design flexibility and the economics of building with brick, will appear in six national publications serving the architectural and professional builder markets.

The full-page, full-color ads "What's a four-letter word for a brick House? SOLD" and "Even when the idea is daring, the budget doesn't have to be" have begun appearing in Professional Builder, Builder, Architectural Record, Progressive Architecture, Architecture (AIA) Journal, and the new Professional Builder Plans Book.

Nat'l Gypsum's Earnings Soar in 1st Quarter

National Gypsum Co., Dallas, Texas, reported that net earnings for the first quarter ended March 31, 1984, rose 600% to a record $24.2 million, versus $3.5 million in the 1983 first quarter. Sales increased 69% to a record $390 million from $231 million, the company said.

Thomas B. Redmond, Formerly of NCMA, Dies

Thomas B. Redmond, 49, formerly vice president of technical services for the National Concrete Masonry Association, died March 17, 1984 of complications following surgery at a Jacksonville, Fla., hospital. He had resided in St. Augustine, Fla., since retiring from NCMA in April, 1979 for health reasons.

Mr. Redmond joined NCMA in 1960 as autoclave engineer. From 1967 to 1974, he was manager of the Research & Development Laboratory with responsibilities in product research and development of new construction systems and manufacturing techniques. He also devised NCMA educational and training programs, and from 1975 until his retirement he was in charge of all NCMA technical activities.

A civil engineering graduate of the University of Florida, Mr. Redmond was a registered professional engineer and a fellow of the American Concrete Institute.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey; a son, Michael; a daughter, Laura; one granddaughter, three sisters and three brothers.
