Spector Group Dominates Long Island
AIA Architectural Awards
The American Institute of Architects awarded four Gold Medals and one Silver Medal to The Spector Group, North Hills, N.Y., at the recently held Long Island AIA annual Awards Presentation, the most awards ever won by a single firm at one time in the history of the program.

Of the four Gold Awards, two were received for The Spector Group's Roslyn Highlands Firehouse (pictured). The remaining three awards were won by the firm's 355,000 sq. ft. 1111 Westchester Avenue NYNEX corporate center in White Plains, N.Y.; the boldly designed 350,000 sq. ft. Atrium V for the Merrill-Lynch Executive Group in Somerset, N.J., and the rehabilitation and renovation of the world renowned New York Hilton at Rockefeller Center.

The 18,500 sq. ft. firehouse sits gracefully on high ground overlooking the village it protects. Chosen for its warmth and tactile qualities, multiple tones of articulated face brick, set in natural-colored mortar with concrete block back-up, provided the benevolent impression necessary for municipal approvals.

New Medical Office Building in Boston
Construction has been completed on a new six-story medical office building in the Longwood medical area of Boston. Jung/Brannen Associates, Inc., one of Boston's largest architectural, planning and interior design firms, were the designers of the Longwood project.

The patterned brick, non-reflective ribbon windows and rusticated base that mark the exterior of the 98,000 sq. ft. structure and the connecting 500-car parking garage add warmth to the area and complement the medical complexes nearby. The use of arches references many of the older surrounding buildings. A skylight covered atrium, featuring a free-standing clock tower, rises from the fourth to the top floor.

66 ways
to tie masonry walls
AA675 is an outstanding masonry reinforcing that provides adjustment up to 2½" when face and back up joints don't line up. This is just one of 66 wire reinforcement and tie systems illustrated in the AA Wire 1987 Masonry Reinforcing Guide. Architects, engineers and builders will find this free guide a valuable tool for selecting the right ties for every wall.
