"The Second-Generation Boss: A Successor's Guide to Becoming the Next Owner-Manager of a Successful Family Business." By Donald J. Jonovic, Ph.D. 220 pages; illustrated: $19.95. From: Center for Family Business, 5763 Mayfield Rd., P.O. Box 24268, Cleveland, OH 44124.

The Second-Generation Boss focuses on a "minority" group in the U.S. that isn't on any of the government lists-the heirs and successors of business owners. Described as the "first realistic, compassionate and understanding discussion of what successors have to go through to succeed," this book makes a frontal attack on a common prejudice-that heirs to successful business owners are little more than members of a "lucky sperm club," and an "over-privileged and under-endowed" bunch of spoiled kids who won't be able to rise to their challenges.

"There's another side to succesion." writes the author, "one few people other than successors who have survived the process understand. Along with their benefits, heirs to business owners also inherit pressures, loneliness, frustrated expectations, and responsibility. In payment for opportunity, they are asked to accept the huge burden of having a complex and potentially explosive asset placed in their hands."

A successful business can't just be dumped on heirs and successors, Dr. Jonovic writes. Planning for ownership transition has to begin early, almost from the outset, so that the heirs can be prepared the right way. Laying these plans, carrying them out, and correcting the inevitable mistakes are the main subjects of this book.
