The jury's comments on this New York. N.Y. project: "The Mt. Sinai-Resident Facility stands out for its distinctive ability to merge in with the pattern of its surroundings. The building's strong and vigorous appearance combined with its hard edges reflect the tough community in which it stands.
"Mt. Sinai is significant for its massing into repetitive bays. A modulation of curved glass bays juxtaposed to solids on the upper floors provide a variety of setback terraces and window treatments. The simple brick detailing in an abstracted pattern of rustication and decorative window grills help enliven the necessarily spare basic bays.
"To develop architectural quality out of a program of high-rise dorms on a light budget is a grand achievement."
