Brick In Architecture Award

Nine architectural firms were honored with the "Brick In Architecture Award" for outstanding achievement in brick design at a special banquet held at the National Building Museum, Washington, D.C. on June 13th. The winners are the first architects to receive national recognition for projects that specifically demonstrate successful and innovative brick use. Sponsored by the Brick Institute of America, the program received more than 230 entries from the United States and Canada.

Jury members were: Harrison Fraker, Minneapolis, chairman: Arthur Cotton Moore, Washington, D.C.; Frank Welch, Dallas, and Barton Phelps, Los Angeles.

The award, a brick bas relief sculpture, was designed by Endicott Clay Products Co. with Mrs. Ina Fike the artist. The sculpture's design depicted the theme of brick throughout the ages.

The nine award recipients and honored projects were:

* Centerbrook Architects, Hood Museum of Art.
* Cesar Pelli & Associates, Inc., Herring Hall, Rice University.
* College Planning Associates, Western Wyoming College.
* Davis, Brody & Associates, Mount Sinai Resident Facility.
* Hagman Yaw Architects, Ltd, Phase II Hotel Jerome Addition.
* Kohn Pedersen Fox associates, PC, ABC Studios.
* Meyer, Scherer & Rockcastle, Facility Systems, Inc.
* Sasaki Associates, Inc., Edith Stein Hall, College of the Holy Cross.
* Short & Ford Architects, Student Houses at the Lawrenceville School.

Edith Stein Hall, Holy Cross College
Worcester, MA

Architects: Sasaki Associates, Inc.

Photographer: Steve Rosenthal

The jury's comments on this Worcester, Mass. project: "The large and very handsome classroom facility at Holy Cross College is cleverly located so as not to impose on the eclectic and comfortably scaled 19th century campus. Edith Stein Hall is mostly surrounded by brick construction which reflects a mixture of Renaissance, Gothic, Federal and Modern architecture. The detailing of brick on the exterior walls gives the building a finer scale and a sense of continuity with the existing architecture of the Holy Cross Campus.

"Edith Stein Hall's 'post-modern' inflections weave smoothly into the building's scheme and the entire campus aura, without arm-waving to receive recognition."

Brick Manufacturer: Glen-Gery Corporation
