Fork Lift Operation

When attempting to free a fork lift that has become stuck, be careful not to apply too much force. The force needed to break it loose could severely damage the fork lift.

Changes in Lighting

Changes in lighting conditions can keep you from seeing properly or keep others from seeing you. You would most often encounter this condition on a masonry job when you are going from the outside sunlight into the interior of a building, since your eyes need a few second to adjust to the change in lighting conditions.

ALLOW A FEW seconds for your eyes to adjust to changes in lighting conditions.

This is especially hazardous if the operator is wearing sunglasses. You should remove your sunglasses when you enter a building. Remember also that the lights on a fork lift are there not only so that you can see, but also so that others can see you.

Floor Load Capacities

It is essential to know the load capacities of floor systems when there is a basement or another floor underneath. This also applies to docks and bridges and is especially true in the case of some of the large, heavy rough-terrain fork lifts which are also capable of carrying heavy loads. The combination of machine and load weight may be enough to break through the structural system the fork lift is driving on. Know not only the weight of the fork lift and the load, but also the load capabilities of the floor, dock, or bridge you will be crossing.

Overhead Conditions

Be continually alert to overhead conditions and objects that may come in contact with the mast or boom. This is especially important in case of electrical wires which could electrocute you and anyone else in contact with the fork lift, or cause serious injuries.

If the load being carried is metal, such as re-bars or horizontal wall joint reinforcing, make sure that the load does not touch the wires, since such items conduct electricity which could be transferred down the mast or boom and through you.

Make sure that the clearance under doors, ducts, and pipes is adequate for the fork lift's upright parts, such as the mast or boom, to pass underneath. Approach locations with overhead objects slowly, in order to make sure the proper clearance is available.

Running into overhead objects can damage not only the object or building, but also the load being carried and the fork lift. Perhaps more important from the point of view of safety, it can cause the load to be knocked off the forks and to fall through the overhead protection onto you, the operator.

When approaching another vehicle or person stopped in your path, stop and sound your horn. Do not proceed
