Unloading at a Dock

Many times masonry materials may be shipped by railroad car or truck and need to be unloaded at a dock. When a fork lift is being used for unloading, certain precautions need to be taken. Usually, the fork lift used for this is considerably smaller than the rough-terrain equipment used on the job site. Industrial, warehouse-type fork lifts are generally used for unloading at dock locations, due to their small size and maneuverability. Before you enter a railroad car or truck at dockside, it is extremely important to do these things:

Block the wheels of the railroad car or truck.
Secure the dock board firmly.
The dock board is used to bridge the gap between the dock and the railroad car or truck.

When another vehicle or person is within a close distance alongside your path, slow down, sound your horn, and proceed with caution only after the driver or other person has acknowledged your warning. If they do not acknowledge your warning, stop before coming close enough to present a hazard.
