Side Trips & Points of Interest
# Cannon Village
Located 26 miles northeast of Charlotte via 1-85 is the town of Kannapolis, which is home to Cannon Village. Kannapolis was established in 1887 by industrialist Charles Cannon, who quickly turned the town into a leading textile center. When Cannon Mills was bought by Fieldcrest Corporation, the new owner restored Cannon Village and turned it into a Merchandising Center.
The Village, with its blend of Colonial and 20th Century buildings set off by brick sidewalks, has become a magnet for shoppers. It offers a wide variety of boutiques and specialty stores, the most prominently The Cannon Bed and Bath Outlet where you still can buy towels by the Round. For information, call 704-938-3200.
# Waxhaw
A small quaint town about 13 miles south of Charlotte, may have the largest number of antiques shops per capita in the nation. With its carefully preserved turn of the century architecture, Waxhaw is a delightful spot for browsing for that reason.

Three years later a jeweler identified it a gold, which prompted a gold rush.
