Rough Terrain Forklift manufacturers have been refining the units they were producing to refine the features such as greater load capacity, hydrostatic drive, tilting device, four-wheel and crab steering.
Today we are experiencing another phase of refinement to the Rough Terrain Forklift, which has become a workhorse on most masonry job sites.
Lull has developed a precision placement system with TransAction, which hydraulically rolls the boom back and forth on steel rails. This enables the operator to move the load forward up to 80 inches and land material at the maximum lifting height. A new generation of telescopic handlers by Lull, the 644D-34, features the firm's new exclusive precision placement system with TransAction. This model has a 6,000-lb. capacity with a 34-foot lift/landing height. The 844C-42 with TransAction has an 8,000-lb. capacity and a lift/landing height of 42 ft.
One of the stalwarts of the Rough Terrain Forklift Industry has been Pettibone of Baraga, MI. Their new Telescopic Material Handler Model 6044 has a 6,000 lb. maximum load lift capacity and a 44-ft maximum lift height. The machine has a 120-in. wheelbase; a new low profile and a center mounted drive train designed to give greater stability and serviceability. The unit has 360 degree visibility with the boom either up or down. The overall width of the frame has been narrowed making for 55-degree tight turn axles that give an 11 ft. 6 in. turning radius. The 6044 is powered by a 110 hp Cummins Turbo diesel engine. The low center of gravity of the machine creates a high degree of stability for all boom positions, which is enhanced with Pettibone's Rear Axle Stabilization System.
Outriggers have become standard equipment on the new Gradall 534D10-45, which boasts a 10,000 pound capacity, or 7,000 lb. at the full 45-ft. lift height. This machine also has a 31-ft. reach. The machine is equipped with Gradall's no-shift hydrostatic drive train, which gives it easy driving. The unit has 90 degree rear pivot steering so in turning in a circle, the machine pivots on one front wheel, creating a tighter turning radius and keeping the forks and load inside the arc. The 534D10-45 is powered by a four-cylinder, turbo-charged Cummins diesel engine rated at a 116 horsepower positioned next to the cab.
