CONTRACTOR TO CONTRACTOR

Contractor to Contractor is submitted to bring contractors closer together. By sharing thoughts and ideas, mason contractors will find that we all have common bonds and can benefit by sharing with each other. Contractors featured in this column are all members of the MCAA and vary in size, type of masonry performed, and operations style. The purpose of the column is to bring out the common problems, concerns, and positive experiences in the industry. If you would like more information about having your company featured, please contact Jeff Buczkiewicz at 1-800-536-2225.

What is your biggest challenge that you face as a mason contractor?

Estimating the job is the most critical element of my responsibilities. This requires me to attempt to get the work at a price that is high enough to turn a profit and keep our men busy, while still pricing within a competitive range.

If I could change one thing about the industry, it would be?

I would like to see legislation that would provide a more efficient way for subcontractors to be paid for their work. It seems to require constant effort on my part and that of my staff to follow up again and again on our requisitions with many of the General Contactors.

What do you like most about being a contractor in the masonry industry?

It is very rewarding for me to be able to provide a safe and happy working environment for people. I am fortunate to have a group of bricklayers, laborers, and foremen who are the "best of the best" in this area.

What is the project you are most proud of?

Our work on the Thrall Library in Middletown, New York really shows the fine craftsmanship of my men. We were required to match the existing architecture of the old building, and the result was outstanding.

The most innovative thing about our company is?

We use every new product on the market, (i.e. Hydro-Mobile, Grout Hog, hydraulic mixers.) We have recently started a company newsletter, and are looking into developing a website.
