Anthony Westbrook is shown competing last summer in the national masonry competition in the SkillsUSA-VICA National Leadership and Skills Conference.
Anthony Westbrook of Chicago, Ill., is our Masonry Apprentice of the Month. Westbrook learned the trade from his father, Joe, who was his vo-tech instructor. He works with his uncle in his grandfather's masonry contracting business. "I've been around bricklayers all my life," Westbrook says. "It's a good trade."
Graduating last spring from Dunbar Vocational High School in Chicago, Westbrook quickly moved up his workload from part-time to full-time and more. He also works part-time as a security guard. Westbrook competed in the national masonry contest held last summer in Kansas City, Mo. in conjunction with the SkillsUSA-VICA National Leadership and Skills Conference.
"My Dad really pushed me, but I'm glad he did," Westbrook concluded.
Westbrook's goal is to earn enough money to enroll in the construction engineering program at the University of Illinois - Chicago.
