The annual RMMI membership meeting and summer retreat is scheduled for August 10-12 at Mountain Thunder Lodge in Breckenridge. The three-day event is open to all members, prospective members and affiliated association members. In addition to a motivational speaker and annual meeting, the family-friendly summer mountain getaway offers golf, dining and relaxation in one of Colorado's most beautiful, 9,600-foot elevation towns.

Despite all the fun, RMMI's focus is still on promoting the use and understanding of masonry products and professionals in all construction throughout the Rocky Mountain region. Staff and the 2006 board of directors are diligently attending to the Work Safe and mason certification programs, and expanding the educational opportunities in the apprentice training program.

Reported by The Courier, "Stoppiello: Knowledge is key to fighting fires, Feb. 16, 2006.

For firefighters across the nation, knowledge of the intricacies of fire, combustion and the psychology of where people like to hide within a burning building are all important. Equally important is their understanding of the kind of structure the firefighters will be entering.

According to Fire Chief Dean Stoppiello of the Union Beach Fire Department, there are three types of structures: historical masonry houses built in the 19th century, framed houses of the '50s, and new construction. He said that, of these buildings, they see fewer fires in the masonry structures.

"Sometimes the drywall will burn and sometimes there is wood on the inside, but overall they are the most fire resistant," he said.

Having this knowledge of the kind of structures that firefighters will face in each town leads to the ability to make better decisions.

"All of this knowledge translates to saving lives," he said.

Alimak Hek Purchases U.S.-based Champion Elevators

Alimak Hek, a leading manufacturer of rack and pinion driven equipment for vertical transportation, announced that it has purchased the manufacturing and design business from Champion Elevators, a U.S.-based manufacturer of rack and pinion construction hoists and industrial lifts.

Champion Elevators serves the construction industry with temporary hoists, as well as industries such as power, offshore, oil and gas, and refineries with permanent industrial lifts. The Alimak Hek Group is a global, leading supplier of mast climbing equipment and added value services for both temporary and permanent installations providing vertical access solutions for people and materials in the construction industry.

Products will retain the Champion brand name, similar to the Alimak and Hek product lines of Alimak Hek. All Champion and Alimak Hek products will be sold in the U.S. through a joint sales force. Alimak Hek and Champion plan to leave all major products largely unchanged and respect customer product preferences, with the intention of further improving products and services to secure a strong position and meet increasing competition both from local and foreign manufacturers.

During the first half of this year, the Alimak Hek headquarters in the U.S. will be relocated from Bridgeport, Conn., to the Champion Elevator location in Houston. The joint new business will start operating immediately.

Decision Reached on Future of MCPX

The National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA) announced that a decision has been reached on the future of the Manufactured Concrete Products Exposition (MCPX). This popular tradeshow, which has been enjoyed over the past three years, will continue at least through the year 2008.

Sylvester Schmidt, chairman of the board of NCMA commented, "The National Concrete Masonry Association looks forward to working closely and successfully with the National Precast Concrete Association (NCPA), the Interlocking Concrete Paver Institute, the American Concrete Pipe Association and the Precast Concrete Institute, to make these future shows even more successful."

This announcement follows a decision issued earlier by an American Arbitration Association arbitrator who had been selected by NCMA and NPCA to resolve a dispute regarding the show's future. Schmidt added, "As a result of this decision, the concrete products industry will continue to enjoy the opportunities and benefits that MCPX provides."

The 2007 MCPX is scheduled Feb. 22-24 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla. In 2008, MCPX is scheduled Feb. 7-9 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver.
