Updated Masonry Handbook Includes Requirements, Specifications to 2012 IBC, TMS 402/TMS 602-11
For the last 40 years, the *Reinforced Masonry Engineering Handbook—Clay and Concrete Masonry* has been the go-to guide for the industry. The Masonry Institute of America (MIA) and the International Code Council announce the release of the seventh edition of the handbook, updated to conform to the 2012 *International Building Code (IBC)* and the TMS 402/TMS 602-11, Building Code Requirements and Specification for Masonry Structures and Related Commentaries.
"This is the best edition ever," says John Chrysler, P.E., executive director of the Masonry Institute of America. "The graphics are state of the art, and 25 percent of the handbook contains design aids, something that most other books lack."
"This 708-page revised edition includes two complete masonry building design examples and design of masonry retaining walls," says John Henry, PE., principal staff engineer for the Code Council. "The Reinforced Masonry Engi-
Pine Hall Pavers Used in Hardscape NA Winning Projects
Two projects using clay pavers from Pine Hall Brick Co. were winners in this year's Hardscape North America (HNA) Hardscape Project Awards competition. The projects are Artists' Backyard, a vest pocket park on the N.C. State University campus in Raleigh, N.C., which won in the Clay Brick - Residential/Commercial Permeable category, and Old Palm Model Home in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., which won in the Clay Brick-Residential category.
The HNA Hardscape Project Awards recognize outstanding hardscape projects by contractors building residential walkways, patios, driveways and commercial plazas, parking lots and streets. In its fifth year, the awards program received 114 entries and, of them, 20 winners were named. Entries were judged on project intent, design, quality of construction and craftsmanship, compatibility with related construction materials and systems, construction innovation, detailing and overall design excellence.
Artists' Backyard is a joint project between the N.C. State University departments of Landscape Architecture and University Housing. It includes a plaza and rain garden between two older residence halls using a combination of StormPave permeable pavers by Pine Hall Brick, along with materials that were recycled from a building demolition.
In the second project, the design centered on providing a backdrop that catches the eye and draws it naturally to the home beyond. South Florida Homes wanted a warm, inviting approach to the model home in the Old Palm Single Family Home Subdivision in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., but needed a versatile product to carry it off. Genuine clay pavers from Pine Hall Brick and distributor Old Castle Coastal were specified as a starting point. IMAS
