Words: Jeff RussellThe 2014 SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500® Regional Competition for Jacksonville, FL Region was held at Cemex, in Jacksonville, FL on September 27, 2014. 6 teams of brick masons and tenders vied for a competition spot in the 2015 SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 National competition held in Las Vegas, Nevada. There, they will compete for over $100,000 in cash and prizes including a new 2015 Ford F-250 4x4 Super Duty XLT truck.

Pascal Robertson, a mason with Pascal Robertson Masonry, Sorrento, FL , and his mason tender Lawrence (Spoon) Singleton, edged out the rest of the competition to take home first place. His net count of 476 brick got the job done. Not only did first place carry the opportunity to compete in the 2015 SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 in Las Vegas for Pascal, but it also came with $400 in cash, a Marshalltown tool bag and trowel as well as sponsor hats, shirts, etc. The SPEC MIX TOP PRAFTSMAN Award also went to Pascal Robertson, of Pascal Robertson Masonry, along with $300 more in cash. Rex Allen, of Malby’s All-Star Masonry, Middleburg, FL finished as runner up taking home $200 in cash, a Marshalltown tool bag and trowel as well as sponsor hats and shirts. Third place went to mason T.J. Malby of Malby’s All-Star Masonry, Middleburg, FL , who received $150 cash, a Marshalltown tool bag and trowel as well as sponsor hats and t-shirts.

The building trades are the life blood of the US economy and masonry construction is literally a cornerstone of the construction industry. As such, and thanks to the work of Pat McLaughlin at the Masonry Association of Florida, Florida Governor Rick Scott formally made Saturday September 27, 2014 “Statewide Concrete Masonry Day in Florida” to coincide with the 2014 Florida SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 Regional Competition.

Cemex hosted this event and did a wonderful job of hosting the competitors and public at the Florida SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500. Rain threatened early in the morning, but by competition time the rain had stopped creating perfect conditions for the event. A crowd estimated at 100 folks crowded around the competition area to view the state’s top masons show-off their talents in one of the most tightly contested SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 events in years.
