GREATER EMPHASIS ON RESEARCH URGED
WASHINGTON, D. C. The construction industry should be spending between one and two per cent of gross sales on research and development, Dr. Clifford F. Rassweiler, Vice President and Research Director of the Johns-Manville Corporation, told the recent convention of the Structural Clay Products Institute here.
Dr. Rassweiler urged a larger expenditure of money in the construction industry for scientific planned experimentation. He pointed out that American industry spent between $3.7 and $5.6 billion on research in 1958 but construction spends not more than $500 million annually on this phase of its operation. If the building industry annually invested between one and two per cent of its gross sales in research, the result would be almost a billion dollars a year spent on planned scientific experimentation, he said.
HOLD MASONRY COURSE
ROCKFORD, ILL. The Northern Illinois Chapter of the American Institute of Architects sponsored a Masonry Short Course which was held on the evenings of Nov. 21 and 28th and Dec. 5th. Speakers for the three sessions were Colin Munro and Carl Roth, SCPI, and William Loewer and Gordon Stepanek of PCA.

The U. S. Department of Commerce has inaugurated a new service business, a "one stop" information center at which visitors to the National Capital can get answers to their queries on the functions and activities of the U. S. Government relating to business.
The Business Service Center is located in the foyer of the auditorium on the first floor of the Main Commerce building, Fourteenth Street N. W., between E Street and Constitution Avenue. Its telephone number in Washington is Worth 7-5201.
HOLD CONVENTION
Concrete Masonry Association, an organization of the concrete manufacturers in California, held its largest and liveliest convention to date at the Towne and Country Motel in Fresno Wednesday through Sunday, October 18-22.
Several sessions resulted in agreements which will affect the building industry in California, including:
Agreement between the assemblers and suppliers to the block industry, and block manufacturers, to form a "Suppliers Council," to supplement and extend promotion efforts of the masonry industry;
A panel of experts representing plumbing, electrical, masonry, and waterproofing trades, who offered suggestions on how their trades can best work in and with masonry.
Harold E. Logan, Tru-Bloc, San Diego, President of CMA, presided over the convention. Mary McMurray, Secretary-Manager, was in charge of arrangements. William Grindle, Idealite, Selma, presided at several sessions as convention host and chairman of the important Technical Committee.
