All-Masonry Home Built By Minneapolis Chapter

The Concrete and Masonry Contractors Association of Minneapolis and the Structural Clay Products Institute were quick to seize a golden opportunity this summer to draw the attention of the Twin Cities public to the beauty and versatility of insulated masonry walls in home construction.
An all-masonry home, built by CMCA and SCPI in cooperation with other interested organizations, was the grand prize in the Foremost lee Cream Summer Sweepstakes. The home was widely publicized on radio and television and in newspapers during the months of June, July, and August, For two weeks before the grand prize drawing in September the completed "Home of a Lifetime" was open for public inspection. An added bonus of a Dodge Dart automobile to the winner if he had registered at the home during the Open House brought thousands of Minneapolis and St. Paul residents to the home, Drawings for smaller prizes were held periodically throughout the summer to keep public attention focused on the Sweepstakes. Advertising and publicity photographs kept the public up to date on the progress of the construction.
The Concrete and Masonry Contractors had been considering building a promotional all-masonry home during the spring of 1961. As soon as Charles L. Wetzler, field engineer for SCPI, heard that Foremost Dairies were considering a home as first prize in their sweepstakes, he called Rod Antonsen, (Continued on page 22 col. 1)

Harold Spaight Dies
Harold L. Spaight, president of Cedar Rapids Block Co., died on August 25th after an extended illness. Spaight was a co-founder of NCMA and served as its president in 1954. He was the developer of Dur-O-wal masonry reinforcing system, and was the president or senior officer of plants making the product in the U.S. and Canada.
