NEW PLANT IN OREGON

The Pacific Northwest will soon have a new brick plant. The firm to be known as Ceramco, Inc. and will be located at McMinnville, Oregon. This location places it close to Portland yet easily accessible to such other cities as Salem, Corvallis and Eugene. S. B. Nicoll, Jr. estimates that the new facility will be ready in approximately two months and will be producing glazed brick, insulation materials and flue linings. The new plant will have a circular kiln.

SIGN LABOR AGREEMENTS

In the current round of labor negotiations in the cement industry, Alpha Portland Cement Company became the first major eastern producer to sign labor agreements at all of its plants, J. Stewart Baker, Jr. president has announced.

The two-year contracts affect 850 hourly workers of the United Cement, Lime and Gypsum International Union, AFL-CIO, employed at Alpha's eight producing plants and in Martins Creek, Pa. distribution terminal.

The company does business in 25 states covering the east, midwest and gulf coast cement markets. During the second quarter of this year several of these plants incurred a strike.

Mr. Baker, who assumed the presidency of Alpha on July 1, 1965 said the agreements called for wage and fringe benefit improvements.

BOREN PURCHASE PLANT

The Roseboro, N.C., Town officials were advised of the completion of the business transaction of Orton Boren purchasing the old Sampson Brick Company with additional clay land. Mr. Boren, one of the leading brick manufacturers of the nation, expressed the expectations of building a complete, modern tunnel brick plant here within a year, with the capacity for producing 80 thousand brick per day or some 30 million brick per year.

Other plants in the Boren chain include Boren Clay Products, Pleasant Garden, N.C., Kendrick Brick, Monroe, N.C., and Broad River Brick Broad River, S.C.

This new plant will help North Carolina increase the lead it already holds over all other States in this region as the leading brick manufacturing state.
