Concrete Masonry Home Outstanding

In one sense, Mr. & Mrs. Marvin Siesel of San Diego, California live in a historic landmark. But don't expect to see a Victorian monstrosity. Their comfortable concrete block home, built in 1950, was one of the first five model homes to begin a building boom that has ultimately brought over 35,000 people to the Clairemont Mesa section of San Diego.

In a neighborhood of much newer houses, the Siesel home looks as young as it did fifteen years ago-no peeling paint, no weathered walls, and no termites creating hidden dangers.

"The outside paint is the same that was here when we moved in two years ago," says Mr. Siesel. "And still no worries! Our neighbor has a house with redwood trim. He's out there with his paint brush every year."

Mr. Siesel admits to doubts on moving day. "We've never lived in a masonry house before, and we wondered if the walls might not be cold, and possibly even damp. But temperature control proved to be one of the real advantages of a block structure," he said. "And as for atmosphere the warmth of early American decor is a perfect example of how beautifully block walls can add accent to a room."

The Siesel home was built for beauty and endurance with block from Hazard Products, Inc., San Diego's oldest and largest masonry supply firm. When Mr. Siesel decided to have the front entry in flagstone, naturally, he turned to Hazard. The brick planter-divider in the living room is yet another result of masonry inspiration from Hazard.

A block home is well worth the investment of do-it-yourself projects because, as Mr. Siesel says, once it's built with block, it's built to stay young.

Nothing could have survived fifteen-plus years and still put up with four rambunctious kids better than the enduring young charms of concrete masonry. The house on Clairemont Court is still the "Siesel's new house" to their friends. That's saying something for a house that's practically a pioneer.

Elect Bartlett President

During the Annual Meeting held on Saturday afternoon, W. W. Bartlett, Houston, was elected State President and State Chairman-elect for Texas. Gerald Sutherland, Corpus Christi, was selected Vice President, with Chas. Danna Jr., the Secretary-Treasurer.

At the meeting the 1966-67 Texas Buyers Guide was formally released. This year's edition is 114 pages with valuable technical data included. It will continue to serve as one of the finest masonry industry promotion pieces available.

Site of the 1967 and 9th Annual Convention of the Associated Masonry Contractors of Texas will be Austin, Texas. Closing out the various social functions was the Annual Banquet and Dinner Dance. It was held in the ballroom of the El Tropicano and was enjoyed by a capacity audience.
