Awarded Contract

To develop and evaluate a new curriculum in concrete technology the U. S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare has awarded a $400,290 federal contract to the American Concrete Institute, the Portland Cement Association, and the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association.

The Portland Cement Association will serve as principal sponsor and project coordinator. James D. Piper, PCA senior vice-president, and ACI Board Member, will be the principal investigator. Also active on the project are Howard C. Wiechman, national administrator of Technical and Vocational Education, of PCA, and chairman of ACI Committee 119-Education; and John C. Seeger, Jr., past president of ACI British Columbia Chapter, and recently assigned as project manager by PCA. ACI representatives to the administrative team for the project include Robert E. Wilde, assistant secretary; and Gilbert E. Seeley, director of education.

The purpose of the 4-year program is to develop course content and teaching materials to train technicians for the concrete industries. Where no training now exists, the program will provide a curriculum of vocational education. It will be especially important in broadening employment opportunities for nonacademic students and relieving the critical manpower shortage in the cement and concrete industries.
