Art in Architecture by Louis G. Red-
stone, Fellow of the American Insti-
tute of Architects. 236 pages plus in-
dex: 474 illustrations; 10 x 11; Mc-
Graw-Hill; $19.95. Publication date:
June 24, 1968.
The architect must become inter-
ested in the life of his community,
take leadership, and work unselfish-
ly for the betterment of his environ-
ment. Even though the profession of
architecture is a full-time occupation,
a certain part of the architect's time
must be devoted to improving the liv-
ing standards of his fellowmen
there is a continuous 'war' to be fought
-the war against community ugliness
-and architects and city planners
need to be in the forefront of this
fight," writes Louis G. Redstone in
the preface to Art in Architecture
published today by the McGraw-Hill
Book Company.
In the book, designed to stimulate
and promote the integration of the
arts in architecture, the author pre-
sents the best current examples of
architect-artist collaboration. The ex-
amples, which represent a wide and
varied cross section of types of build-
ings and of different approaches to the
use of art forms, are the works of
well-known artists and architects as
well as of professionals known only
in their own regions.
Louis G. Redstone, FAIA, who for
many years has advocated and work-
ed for the integration of the arts in
architecture, has achieved prominence
as an architect and as an artist. Ex-
amples of his work have been pub-
lished in Progressive Architecture,
Architectural Record, and other jour-
nals. He has represented the AIA as a
delegate to International Congresses
in Caracas, Tokyo, Moscow, and
Buenos Aires, including the World
Congress for Housing and Planning
at Puerto Rico. Redstone served as
President of the Detroit Chapter of
the AIA, and is currently the Chair-
man of the Allied Arts Committee of
the Chapter. He is a member of the
Executive Committee, Pan American
Federation of Architects, the Engi-
neering Society of Detroit, and the
Building Research Institute.
