Green Book Available

The all-new 20th Edition, 1969 AED Compilation of Nationally-Averaged Rental Rates and Model Reference Data for Construction Equipment-popularly called the "Green Book" is now available from Associated Equipment Distributors.

Based on the results of a nation-wide survey of distributors conducted last fall, the new 120-page edition presents authoritative rental and related information on more than 2,000 types of equipment-ranging from hand tools to cranes and earthmoving equipment.

In addition to averaged rental rates, the AED Green Book contains a complete Model Reference section for machinery, which lists comparative manufacturer-approved statistics on horsepower, drive, shift, rated capacity, years built, and other important data. Additional information includes guidelines on cost of repairs, time basis for rates, freight charges, equipment condition, taxes, and insurance.

The 1969 Edition, completely sectionalized and tab-indexed, is available at $7.50 per copy. Orders should be sent with remittance to the AED Executive Office, Department R, 615 West 22nd Street, Oak Brook Illinois 60521.

L/B Case Study

A durable solution to the college housing problem-based on the strength of modern brick-has just been finished at Montana State University. Despite being located in the unstable Seismic Zone 3 area, the hi-rise brick bearing wall buildings cost only $17.27 psf-including appliances, carpets, draperies and landscaping.

The project is described in a Case Study available from the Structural Clay Products Institute, 1750 Old Meadow Road, McLean, Virginia 22101.

The 13-building complex marks the first use of modern thin-walled load-bearing construction in an area hitherto anathema to tall masonry. Two nine-story buildings are supported and enclosed by 10½ inch reinforced grouted brick bearing walls; eleven two-story dorms are built with six-inch reinforced brick bearing walls. Despite much reinforcing, the project still cost only $17.27 psf $2.2 million.

Melroe Company of Gwinner, North Dakota, has followed a series of six United States dealer meetings with its first international dealer meeting in Italy. Site of the four-day meeting was Hotel Olivi on the shores of Lake Garda near Verona.

Attendance totalled more than fifty, including Melroe Bobcat dealers from 14 European countries, six factory representatives from Gwinner and five Melroe sales representatives in Europe.

Attending from Gwinner were Irv Melroe, Vice-President; Robert Spolum, Administrative Vice President; Lyal Lindsay, Export Manager; Jack Johnson, Production Manager; Ferd Froeschle, Advertising Manager; and James Werner, Industrial Engineer.

Safety Awards

Eighty cement plants operated by member companies of the Portland Cement Association went through 1968 without a disabling injury. They included eight first-time safety trophy winners, the greatest number since 1960 when there were nine first-time winners.

Ivan F. LeGore, PCA safety director, pointed out that the winning units represented just over half of the 159 eligible plants.

Trophy awards are made to complete cement manufacturing plants.

Seven of the first-time plant winners are located in the United States and one in Canada. They are:

Calaveras Cement Division, The Flintkote Co., Redding, Calif.; Capitol Aggregates, Inc. (Capitol Cement Division), San Antonio, Texas; Ideal Cement Co., Division of Ideal Basic Industries, Inc., Seattle, Wash.; Kaiser Cement & Gypsum Corp., Montana City, Mont.; OKC Corp., Pryor, Okla.; Santee Portland Cement Corp., Holly Hill, S.C.; Gifford-Hill Portland Cement Co., Midlothian, Texas; and Lafarge Cement of North America Ltd., Richmond, B.C., Canada.

Cement manufacturing has long been rated among the safest of all heavy industries. The Award of Honor, highest recognition for industrial safety by the National Safety Council, was received by PCA in 1966.
